Youth Obesity Prevention

The following resources are provided to support schools, communities, healthcare providers and parents with information and materials on youth obesity prevention and weight management programs.

GROWTH SCREENING (BMI) COMMUNICATION KIT

The Pennsylvania Growth Screening Program (GSP) requires schools to weigh and measure all students and to calculate and record Body Mass Index (BMI) in the school health record.

School nurses then inform parents about their child's results and recommend that they share the information with their healthcare providers.

WE CAN! PARTNERSHIP

PANA is proud to be a National Supporting Partner of the WeCan! program. PANA will serve as the central clearinghouse and coordinator for state and local partners who would like to be recognized as We Can Community Partners and utilize the We Can materials.

We Can! (Ways to Enhance Children's Activity & Nutrition) is a national program designed as a one-stop resource for parents and caregivers interested in practical tools to help children 8-13 years old stay at a healthy weight.

Youth Obesity Prevention and Weight Management Program Inventory

State-wide Directory of Pediatric Weight Management and Weight Gain Prevention Programs will be launched January 2006. This state-wide resource directory of pediatric weight management or weight gain prevention programs offered in clinical, research, or community/school settings by county is intended to serve as a resource for families, providers and schools in response to Pennsylvania's new Growth Screening requirements of school age children. The directory will be updated annually. The inventory of programs will also help PANA's partnering organizations and agencies make informed decisions about where resources are most needed to support youth and families.
